Mercedes-Benz in Tbilisi Protected by Penetron Technology
The opening of the Mercedes-Benz in Tbilisi, Georgia in January 2021 brought the renowned German luxury automotive brand to Georgia. The project’s general contractor specified the Penetron System for all below-grade and ground-level concrete structures to ensure durability.
Located just west of downtown Tbilisi, the new Mercedes-Benz dealership features spacious showrooms and comprehensive garage and service areas in a combined 7,000 m2 (76,000 ft2) of floor space. AKA, the general representative for Mercedes-Benz in Tbilisi, Georgia, and project owner, contracted with INSI, the general contractor, to build the US$10 million project. The completed facility is now the sole official Mercedes-Benz franchise in the whole Caucasus region.
Confronted with High Groundwater Levels
“INSI has been a long-term Penetron partner for numerous projects across Georgia,” says Jimsher Shengelia, Director of Penetron Georgia. “For the Mercedes-Benz project, the architect asked for a waterproofing solution to address the high groundwater situation at the construction site.”
PENETRON ADMIX, a crystalline waterproofing admixture, was added to the concrete mix for the foundation slabs and below-grade concrete structures. The precast concrete water reservoir (8x6x4 m) was treated with topical applications of PENETRON, a surface-applied, crystalline waterproofing material, and PENECRETE MORTAR, a mortar, was used in combination with PENETRON for filling non-moving cracks, construction joints, and form-tie holes, to ensure a permanently waterproof structure.
Integral Waterproofing Solution
Once mixed into concrete or applied to the positive or negative side of a prepared concrete surface, the proprietary chemicals in Penetron crystalline products react in a catalytic reaction with moisture to generate a non-soluble crystalline formation throughout the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete. This formation becomes an integral part of the concrete matrix and permanently seals the concrete against the penetration of water or liquids from any direction.
“As an integral solution, Penetron crystalline products significantly reduce any future concrete maintenance and repair costs by having the ability to self-heal small hairline cracks that may form in the future,” adds Jimsher Shengelia.
